Two-particle interferometry for non-central heavy-ion collisions

چکیده
In non-central heavy ion collisions, identical two particle Hanbury-Brown/Twiss (HBT) correlations C(K,q) depend on the azimuthal direction of the pair momentum K. We investigate the consequences for a harmonic analysis of the corresponding HBT radius parameters R ij . Our discussion includes both, a model-independent analysis of these parameters in the Gaussian approximation, and the study of a class of hydrodynamical models which mimic essential geometrical and dynamical properties of peripheral heavy ion collisions. Also, we discuss the additional geometrical and dynamical information contained in the harmonic coefficients of R ij . The leading contribution of their first and second harmonics are found to satisfy simple constraints. This allows for a minimal, azimuthally sensitive parametrization of all first and second harmonic coefficients in terms of only two additional fit parameters. We determine to what extent these parameters can be extracted from experimental data despite finite multiplicity fluctuations and the resulting uncertainty in the reconstruction of the reaction plane.

Two-particle interferometry, which exploits the Bose-Einstein symmetrization effects on the production cross section for pairs of identical bosons, has become a powerful tool to extract detailed space-time information about the freeze-out configuration of the hot and dense fireballs formed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions [1]. Recent exciting data on transverse flow anisotropies in non-cent...

Received (received date) Revised (revised date) Large spatial density fluctuations in high-energy heavy-ion collisions can come from many sources: initial transverse density fluctuations, non-central collisions, phase transitions , surface tension, and fragmentations. The common presence of some of these sources in high-energy heavy-ion collisions suggests that large scale density fluctuations ...

Understanding particle emission in relativistic nuclear collision is crucial in order to determine whether a phase transition to quark-gluon plasma has occurred. Particle interferometry was invented by Hanbury-Brown & Twiss (HBT) for stellar size determination [1] and is now employed in nuclear collisions [2–8]. It is a very powerful method to determine the 3-dimensional source sizes, lifetimes...
متن کاملParticle-particle Correlations and the Space-time Structure of Heavy Ion Collisions
The present status of the use of two-particle intensity interferometry as a diagnostic tool to study the space-time dynamics of intermediate energy heavy ion collisions is examined. Calculations for the two-proton and two-pion correlation functions are presented and compared to experiment. The calculations are based on the nuclear Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport theory.

Hadronic oneand two-particle spectra provide for each particle species information about the phase-space distribution S(x,K) of the hadronic emission region [1]. Once reconstructed from the measured spectra, S(x,K) allows to distinguish between different dynamical scenarios of heavy ion collisions. It provides an experiment-based starting point for a dynamical back extrapolation into the hot an...
